Quality refurbishments

“Although we fell in love with Newton Hall at first sight, we knew that to restore the property would be a challenge and would require a partnership with someone who had the creativity and extensive experience in heritage buildings. Given the historic interest and the poor state of repair the property was in we knew that any work would be carefully scrutinised by Harrogate Borough Council Planning Department, English Heritage, the Parish Council and Sir Thomas Ingilby, amongst others. We are delighted with all that has been achieved.

This was due in no small measure to Mervyn Darby skilfully navigating our plans through Harrogate Borough Council and English Heritage and dealing with the archaeological survey and the numerous specialist contractors. There is no doubt that the relationships he created, his experience and his approach to the design and execution of the work was fundamental to the successful outcome. We remain grateful to him for the vision that he displayed in developing the plans and in delivering the project”

Top-quality renovations

“The architect quickly established a constructive working relationship with the contractors and the numerous sub-contractors and met with them on a regular basis to co-ordinate the various trades and to anticipate their future requirements and this worked very well. We had our own view of how we wanted the property to work and the architect was really instrumental in offering options at every stage of the work so that we could re-evaluate our own ideas which then gave us confidence in our decision making and together we produced a great result integrating practical solutions with top quality renovations in total sympathy with the original constructional style and materials.”

Practical and creative services

“A successful building project requires a dialogue between the architect and the client to ensure that options are fully explored and that the architect is able to convert that dialogue into the finished concept. Mervyn Darby fulfilled that role to a very high standard during the development of Home Farm. He was patient and understanding and also highly practical in the creative solutions he brought forward. We could not have been more pleased with the outcome and we would recommend him for projects which require those skills without hesitation."
